On the night of November 5, 2006, the Barrick family was driving home from their daughter's vocal performance at church, ready to enjoy a night together with friends and family. But they never made it. Not far from their home, their van was hit by a drunk driver who moments earlier had been pulled over by the police. Mom Linda, Dad Andy and son Josh all were severely injured in the accident but assured recovery. But fifteen-year-old Jen who suffered from multiple skull fractures and severe brain trauma was not expected to live through the night.
As the Barrick family and their close-knit community came together, all they could do was pray and put Jen's life in God's hands. For five weeks Jen lay in a coma and the doctors warned the family that if Jen did ever wake up, she would not be herself, screaming in confusion and cursing. But when she did wake up, a miracle occurred. Jen instantly began praying and praising God. She couldn't remember her parents, her friends, or her name but she could recite scripture and praise songs from her heart.
As Jen's long and painful recovery continued, she never lost hope and never lost her faith in God. Under circumstances that would shatter any adult, Jen continued to press forward, always giving God the first and last praises.
Miracle for Jen by Linda Barrick is the true story of a family who overcame an unthinkable tragedy and learned to trust to God no matter what was thrown their way in life. Barrick recounts life before the accident, what she remembers of that night, and the difficult and painful road the family travelled toward healing. Jen's faith and perseverance in God were an inspiration to not only her family but to people all across the country who heard Jen's story. This is a triumphant testimony and as you read it you can't help but give God praise and thanks for the work He has done in your life.
I highly recommend this book. Jen's faith is incredible and inspiring. Included in the book are excerpts from Jen's diary before the accident and what is shown is a beautiful young woman whose heart is on fire for God. That should be inspiring enough, but what is absolutely remarkable is the way her faith was transformed by God as she lay in a coma. To not remember your own name but to be able to recite scripture, how can one not be amazed and moved in their own walk with God. Jen never gave up and went on to share with everyone she came across the amazing love and power of Jesus Christ. Miracles abound in this story of the Barrick family and this book will make your laugh, cry and praise God, realizing that even when life gets tougher than you thought possible, God is right there to pull you through it.
